The old world meets the new at Kraków’s oldest and most famous restaurant, Wierzynek Restaurant in the picturesque Old Town district. Incredibly, the restaurant can trace its history back to 1364.
According to legend, wealthy Krakow merchant named Mikołaj Wierzynek hosted a sumptuous feast for the monarchs of Europe on behalf of the Polish king, Casimir the Great. Wierzynek took his task very seriously and his lavish banquet apparently overwhelmed his noble guests.
“It’s said that the tables were heavy with food and drinks and the guests celebrated for 20 days and nights. When they were leaving, the generous merchant presented each guest with a splendid gift of gold and silver tableware,” says Przemyslaw Zając, manager of Wierzynek Restaurant.
“We’ve continued this great medieval tradition of feasting right up to the present day, by giving a royal welcome to each and every one of our guests,” he adds. Every day, the restaurant’s chefs fill tables with traditionally prepared meat, fish and wild-mushroom dishes, Polish groats, pâtés and dumplings. “Wierzynek Restaurant is the best choice, if you’d like to try dishes prepared according to old Polish royal court.”
